The
low contrast filter reduces the difference between the light
and dark areas of the scene, preventing highlights from
blowing out while still maintaining detail in the shadow
areas. The low contrast filter works by spreading some
of the light from the bright areas onto the other parts of the
image. It is ideal for use in sunlight or when other
very bright lights are being used. It is often used in
video work as a way to compensate for the video CCD's lack of
latitude (compared to that of film stock). The low contrast
filter is offered in various densities.
